Some Tips and Tricks on Tenses

Learning tenses and how they are used in English will help you to be able to improve your speaking and writing skills.

The tenses simply indicate the time of an action or state of being as shown by a verb.

Time can be split into three periods The Present (what you are doing), The Past (what you did) and The Future (what you are going to do, or hope / plan to do).

In the rest of the essay I introduce the different types of tenses used in English Grammar then I will share some tips to enhance your grammar tenses skill.

  Present continuous

Use

to show an event that is going on right now.

How to form

am/is/are + verb + ing

Example

am working / is working / are working

Sentences example

Alex is working in the house.
She and her sister are working at bank now.

we use the present continuous when we talk about something which is happening at the time of speaking.
tips:
  • Around the time of speaking.

We also use the present continuous when we talk about something which is happening around the time of speaking. But not necessarily exactly at the time of speaking.

Silvia is learning English at the moment.  (not learns)

Have you heard about Tom? He is building his own house. (not builds)

  • A period around the present.

We often use the present continuous when we talk about a period around the present. For example: today, this season:

“You’re working hard today.” …. “yes, I have a lot to do.”

Tom isn’t playing football this season. he wants to concentrate on his studies.

  • Changing situations.

We use the present continuous when we talk about changing situations:

the population of the world is rising very fast. (not rises)

Is your English getting better? (not does … get)
