English Sentence Structure

Simple Sentence

A simple sentence contains one independent clause.

What’s an “independent clause”? It’s one subject followed by one verb or verb phrase. It expresses a single idea.

Examples of simple sentences:
◾I‘m happy.
◾Robert doesn’t eat meat.
◾My brother and I went to the mall last night.
◾This new laptop computer has already crashed twice.

Sentence structure in English Writing

What is a complete sentence?

Sentences provide us with the framework for the clear written expression of our ideas. The aim in writing is always to write in complete sentences which are correctly punctuated. Sentences always begin with a capital letter and end in either a full stop, exclamation or question mark. A complete sentence always contains a verb, expresses a complete idea and makes sense standing alone.

Active-Passive Voices

What Is Active Voice?

An author may write a sentence in one of two "voices"—active or passive. The active voice emphasizes the performer (or agent) of the action:

Wind disperses plant seeds.

Smith et al. investigated the relationship.

We have analyzed the results.

The active voice is direct (performer–verb–receiver), vigorous, clear, and concise. The reader knows who is responsible for the action.

Writing scientific papers in English

Writing an effective scientific paper is not easy. A good rule of thumb is to write as if your paper will be read by a person who knows about the field in general but does not already know what you did. Before you write a scientific paper, read some scientific papers that have been written in the format of the paper you plan to use. In addition to the science, pay attention to the writing style and format because Scientific English writing has its own style and rhythm.
